eLocity A7 Work-in-Progress Review

Post by tipstir on Tue Dec 21, 2010 7:08 pm

Wow! No HDMI, No USB cables, just some stereo headphone and huge PSU. Plus I turning it on going to be a pain. It found the WiFi though. 100%. I going to run some test now..

View angles on A7 not that great. Direct view is okay. I ran some Movie Trailers like Yoga Bear and you can see the water very well. Tron trailer looks okay not the best but okay I use Movefone and have it set to HQ. Over my WiFi network here with 32 nodes and 3x 3T/3R 2x N300 and 1x N450 (in N300 mode) each one on a different floor level. Coverage is 84% for the lowest to 100% each for the higher level. I won't get into too much with that but the WiFi on the A7 is registering 84% under WiFi Buddy and also showing Excellent Signal.

I also don't like the fact the way the power has to be pushed all the way in to turn back on the unit or to get it out of sleep. There is a slight vibrate feature.
I've ran some more test:

Max CPU is 1GHz (1000MHz) / 216MHz min. RAM have force free to 276 to 296MB. WiFi G showing link speed of 36mbps out of 54mbps. Still not bad but would be nice if it was N300. A Pandigital 9" gets 272mbps out of 300mbps. Trust me don't want that tablet hybrid.

I have Aki-Reader loaded. I'll have to see how the eReader does. I don't use that feature. I do read the news. But can't get my favorite program to install it won't install. I have eGadget and wanted to use the HD feature and see how that works. I have all the Angry birds including Christmas an none will install. I try this kid go cart game is in 3D that had played just find. My Rage of Thunder II won't start.

Again I use the tablet for getting on net, check the network nodes, remote opts things like. Might see what new movie is playing. Might want to jump behind the wheel and drive through 3D VRT. Still it should be able to do all of that. Streaming feature looks smooth.

I'll check the e-REader and let you know.

Elocity arrived today...

Post by SOLORIDER on Thu Dec 23, 2010 6:13 pm

Out of the box this user's experience has been stellar so far! Gmail set up w/o flaw. Downloaded Kindle, sync and voila reading my open books. HD is phenomenal...Nicholas Cage trailer was incredible. Action was smooth and as good as my DVD player. Keyboard responsive. Wifi snap to set up...haven't had problems with airplane mode. Browser/internet searches quick. Flash works super on NY Times and other sites. Not particularly an elegant box - a little square around the edges - the extra weight is not a big deal for me. All in all I'm quite impressed with the unit. It does what I want it to do. I'll wait until either an easy hack comes along for Market, Stream TV coming up with a fix or I'll wait the Froyo upgrades from Google. Considerfing the several tablets I've had in my hands - aPad 10", Coby 7", Nextbook and Entourage...the Elocitgy so far is hands down superior. For $299 its a great buy. I'll be interested to hear what others experience as they get acquainted with their Elocity tablet...

Have you tried the Next3 much better performance wise. I keeping my next3 beats the A7 panel hands down though Next3 does 720p and can do more formats. It can't play Angry Birds. I'll get something smaller that Runs Android OS 2.3 or 2.4 which ever one comes out. Android OS 2.2 has some series bugs.

Coby still on top of the A7 in HDMI and screen Next3 is thin and slight the screen 8.4" the extra 1.4" is nice touch. They give you in the box which is well package, leather case, USB cable not like Elocity just the cheap pair of stereo headphones no USB no leather case for the price I paid come one. They lied about the Multi-touch then there is the WiFi issues. To me the screen is smaller than my two Epads and Maylong M150.

I hear you, but we all use these things for different reasons. My goal was to have an ereader that is agnostic to format. I wanted to read by Kindle library, download/read from BN and Borders as well. I likely won't use the device as a DVD player and will likely only cruise the internet occassionally and generally read content on it. I like the flash as an added bonus for me. Two finger touch for me is okay - the keyboard is much more responsive and text does size - although not super smooth like multi touch. So the Coby 7015 w/o Market - nice 7" tablet but just doesn't do the trick for me. The Nextbook has same issues. I do like the capacitive touch to the Elocity. The speed is phenomenal both on the CPU and online. I'm not familiar with Maylong but I found the ePad lacking. I'm following the issues folks are having hacking these devices and its not for me. For what I'm doing - ereader/internet content-research/gmail - I like the Elocity better than my Ipad. Ipads are overrated, bulky and really can't do much of what I wanted it for. Not sure the tablets are up to real gaming. All in all, I think all this technology is still very young, the Android will likely come out on top and there's more to come. I think we all jumped in too soon. We'll see if Elocity comes through with he firmware upgrade to address the wifi bug. And, I'll watch what some of you do with Elocity and maybe follow your steps...

Well I've updated mine now. They've add some new icons still no market yet. I guess the Xda crowd will figure out slide-load it.

Angry Birds now loads and plays great, still with Archos A series I was able to hear more sound depth to sound tracks than with A7.

I'll check out the rest later. Next3 has a place but the A7 blows it down with 1GHz True CPU, 512MB RAM and 4GB for NAND storage.

Both have fingerprints show up more on both.
