Wacko On-screen Keyboard Behavior and USB Keyboard Issues

I've repeatedly had problems with the on-screen keyboard, in that sometimes when I'm typing a space between words, a period will get inserted, and then a bunch of spaces will be auto-inserted at a very fast rate until I type anything else. I don't know whether it's just this keyboard code, or whether it occurs on other Android devices.

Also, I have had problems with the external USB keyboard being able to consistently enter text - when I tap a text field, the on-screen keyboard will come up, and typing on the USB keyboard doesn't always result in text being entered into the field. Once this behavior starts, it doesn't matter which field I try to type into, until I navigate away to another app. I haven't exhaustively tested this, and I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen this, on the Maylong, or any Android device. Is there a way to use another on-screen keyboard by just replacing one, or more, files in the base OS configuration?

Which ROM and model?

WMT2.1.2_105 has a lot of changes to the code structure.

WMT2.1.1_105 on 150101 using tz1111.... whatever mod (how can the mod version be determined without rebooting to see the version on the splash screen?).
