Configuring DLInk Dir-615 for Access Point

Post by Chevar18 on Mon Jun 28, 2010 8:44 pm

Hello Tipstir and Everyone,
Thank you for the assistance and inviting me to be here at the site.
Here's my setup: Existing Dlink Dir-615 working for a long time on my Home network
Connected hardwired component is Directv receiver, Desktop Computer and 2 Laptops which are Wireless on this router.
Now there is on one of the ports a wire that goes all the way to the other end of the house, that before there was a desktop connected there on that Cat5 wire. Gateway default IP is how it comes factory 192.168.0.1
I Bought another Dir-615 I have not done nothing to it except take it out of the box.
Now what I'm aiming to do if its possible and of course with your help is connect the new router to the other end of that wire to extend the coverage signal as an access point to that part of the house.
Please bear with me because I'm not to network literate, but I know that I've come to the right place.
Thank you so much in advance.

This is how you would connect from your current DIR-615 which is the one running DHCP Server to the new one the second DIR-615 as access point

1. Connect the second DIR-615 directly to a laptop or desktop using LAN cable
2. Login to the second DIR-615 into the Web Admin 192.168.0.1
3. Click on Network Settings
4. Un-check Enable DHCP Server
5. Change the Router Settings IP address to 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.2
6. Click save settings
7. Under Advanced tab
8. Un-check SPI for firewall settings

9. See image below

Although not DIR-615, but DIR-655 with the extra ANT in the middle but this gives you idea how it would be used as hardwired access point for wireless.

Just to clarify on number 5 that is the router IP Address not the IP Address range right?
Also on Number 1 when I connect the laptop using LAN Cable I connect it to the WAN port on router or any of the other ports (1,2,3,4)?

You can operate outside the range of the DHCP and use the Static range of 2 thru 99 instead of the 100 to 199 for DHCP range. I would keep both ranges separated from the other.
Make sure you don't have anything on the network that is using 192.168.0.2. To play it safe use 192.168.0.50 instead of the 192.168.0.2.

I have the dir-615. Trust me you want to replace it asap. P2P, lan to lan, and wireless are all bad on the dir-615.

ESR-9850 is cheap and better than it in comparison.

Well this is what happen Tipstir I followed the step by step then on the laptop(which is new running Windows 7) at that end of the house it was picking up the router and I tried to connect but it would prompt me into trying to setup the router. Tried a few times but nothing. I had no other choice but setting up and enabling DHCP and setting up an IP address range, setting up SSID and securing the router. Also changed the Router IP address like you told me to 192.168.0.50. So to make a long story short its working since last night so far. One thing is my son received on his PS3 a DNS error. Is there something I did wrong for this to happen?
Thanks

Example:
First DIR-615 AP/Router
SSID MYNET1 MIX
Passcode: xxxxxxx

Second DIR-615 AP
SSID MYNET2 MIX
Passcode: xxxxxx

Make sure WPS is disable on both AP/Router and AP. On your sons PS3 make sure your not using WPS. Enter in the Passcode manually. That's the only thing you should do on this Windows 7. The laptop should do a site survey and dectect either AP?

The range for you DHCP on your main DIR-615 use one of those numbers in that range that instead and then reserve it in the first DIR-615. 192.168.0.150 for the second one. Try that instead of the 192.168.0.50.

How do you have PS3 configured? Wired or Wireless?

Ok my son's PS3 is wireless, I just noticed that the PS3's IP address is 192.168.0.051 and it is connecting like it always did to the main router not the new AP router (PS3 is 20' away from main(first) router).
On the AP router the range I put for DHCP is 192.168.0.51-192.168.0.99 because the range for the First (main) router is 192.168.0.100-192.168.0.199 not to conflict with each other. Ok and on both router I have the Wifi Protected Setuop Enabled....

WPS is enabled? If you setup your own SSID and passcode (password) you don't need WPS enable. Well leave it then you seem to be fine. So you fix the second AP DIR-615 so that the PS3 will connect to it. What type of signal strength do you see in DIR-615 for your wireless?

I disabled the WPS on the second (AP) router and PS3 so far so good connected without no problem.
Also I checked IP address on PS3 and its back on the range of the main router. PS3 always connects to the main router wireless since it is very close to it and its always been that way since my son has it.

Try disabling the DNS Relay on the main to see if it clears up the DNS error?

I disabled the DNS on the main, tried it nothing same thing. Then I disabled it on the second router(AP) turned off the PS3 same way I did it on the main, tried it still nothing. I looked at the IP on the PS3 and its 192.168.0.51 it seems it wants to go on the DHCP range of the second router(AP) which is 192.168.0.51-192.168.0.99. So I decided to change the range of the second router to 192.168.0.80- 192.168.0.99, tried it again PS3 decides to go on IP 192.168.0.80.
For some reason it goes to IP range of second router and thats when the DNS error occurs, that it wont connect.
Now what else can I do, can I assign a static IP so it stays within the range of the Main Router?
Thats where it seems to work (when it connects to the main router, which is where it always worked) Smile Sad

Are you assigning at static IP for PS3 or are you just letting it do a site survey. See with my Wii the wireless can see all my AP in my area. I still have to type in the SSID and passcode to lock it down. Once that is completed it can see the network and connect. I sure you have same in a way. But let's do this change the second AP address to 192.168.0.99 instead of the 192.168.0.50. Seems to be some sort of conflict. Make sure that AP doesn't have SPI enabled you don't have need that or the NAT because everything goes through the first AP/Router.

What's the Hardware for this router and what firmware are you using?

No I've never assigned a static IP....Should I assign a static IP?? The PS3 has the SSID and Passcode from the main router and its always been like that since my son got it 's always been locked down but it seems to want to find the IP of the second router that's what it is doing.
nd router has SSID and Passcode different from first router. PS3 does not shoe that when I look at the Network info. It shows SSID and Passcode from main (first) router and IP from Second (AP) router.
I cant answer you nothing else of hardware or firmware, because I'm at work now, but later on I will change the IP to what your telling me and see if that works.
A million Thanks again...

Match the SSID of the first AP to the second AP and see how the PS3 works now? Just don't match the channels let that go into auto channel mode.

Hi Tipstir just to let you know that I tried everything that we talked about and the only thing that worked was assigning a Static IP in the range of the main router's IP to the PS3 along with the router default IP and DNS and all of that.
It was my last resort but it has worked and all good.
Thanks so much for your help!!!!
