Ad-Free Supernova

Post by NickOvTyme on Wed Feb 22, 2012 4:01 pm

I down loaded Adfree/Adaway from the market but I couldn't get them to work each time I tried to apply them. Apparently there are some issues or they're just not a Supernova friendly apps.

So I did some research and I found a work around for those who might be having the same issues.

Requires a rooted Supernova and the ability to write to /system, whether adb if you're familiar enough with it or a file manager like root explorer, ES File Explorer, etc...

Download the Hosts.zip in the first post of this Link through tablet browser or PC
Extract it.
Take the Hosts.txt file and replace the hosts file in /system/etc/hosts

That should do it. There's another Hosts file in /etc but they're linked so if you replace one the other should mirror it.

This kind of dosen;t make sens because the hosts file is used by other app to access the included IPs. This is a file full of IPs that the Addfree is using to block. So if you tried to access one of these IPs you would have conflicting purposes.

Also the file is over two years old so the addresses are likely no good anymore. Ad companies and trackers change these up to try to stay ahead of the blockers.

Have you edited the default.prop file on your Supernova. The problem in the thread you linked sounds more like it is related to write access in Froyo but the the stock default.prop also blocks tru root access to the pad.

I was a bit trigger happy posting. I was going to come back and edit my post and delete it but got distracted with other things.

So if there's a mod available please delete this. I thought I was on to something Smile

My apologies if anybody tried this besides me and it messed something up. So far I haven't had any issues with it, but I got a little ahead of myself with posting

Live and Learn I guess.

No No No !!! LOL Never apologize for trying to help. Plus I can't say for sure it would hurt anything. If it did anything I think it would possibly deny access to accepted hosts either through the an app directly or the browser. Some apps ask to add themselves to the hosts file. If you research that app some more, maybe you can find how it has changed. Perhaps they have an update system now like PeerBlock does on the PC. Any tips or tricks are good points for discussion and there are still many 2.2 users who might be interested in checking out the app.

Oh I'm gonna look into it more...There's a reason that adfree and adaway can't or won't write to /system/etc...there's a work around I'm sure.

Alright I've been looking into this and I still think that my original post is valid.

Adfree or Adway routinely replace the Host file on a device when there is an update. What I haven't figured out is why either of this apps can't write to the SuperNova to replace/update the hosts file.

The solution is to do it manually. What happens is that apps/browsers refer to the hosts file and if an Ad service is listed...it will block the ads. Its not perfect as its near impossible to know all/every ad service out there. So far as I've tested it it works on my SuperNova as well as it does my android phone

LINK to file. http://db.tt/r8lHK16p (extract It before replacing)

Replace the host file on you tablet with it using Root Explorer or the like found in /etc or /system/etc.
