port based vlan switch recommendation needed

Post by Moogle Stiltzkin on Fri Jun 18, 2010 1:50 pm

Just wondering if there is a recommended port based vlan switch to go with my ESR-9850 router.

So the setup would be like this

Fiber modem > port based vlan switch > ESR-9850 router

I only require 5 ports for the switch, and also that it is reliable and won't kill my routing performance bounce

Another thing i need to know is, if i use a switch, how will it affect my QNAP TS-509 Pro webserver setup ??

if i use a normal setup, Modem > router > QNAP

The router is set to do the dhcp to give out lan ip and configured the qnap for a static lan ip. the Qnap has dyndns set up on it.

So if you add the switch into the mix, is there anything needed to configure differently to get the Qnap web server working, or not ?

You need a Smart Switch that can handle VLAN? What brands are available in your area. Trendnet, Cisco Linksys?

Not sure but if you got a recommendation i can find out.

I'm not in too big a hurry to get it so i can order overseas if required :]

By the way a friend suggested to me a good replacement for the dir-615 for performing the vlan tagging is the RB250GS

The specs

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

There is also screenshots of it's SWoS web interface here

But the setup would be like this

Fiber modem >> RB250GS >> ESR-9850 >> my pc and other devices connected with ethernet or wireless

would the switch be able to help the ESR-9850 be able to increase the throughput in that setup ?? or does the switch have to be put after the ESR-9850 ???
