[Official] Telechips 7" TCC890x (Coby KYROS / HSG X5A) rooting/hacking thread

Post by tipstir on Tue Nov 09, 2010 3:33 pm

Chinese-manufactured devices, with Korean cpu.. The midX5a / midx6 are both Telechips-based tablets. They're very similar to the Augen device, except they have the actual HDMI port, 300M /data, correct /cache size and a 3.5" headphone jack

The Pandawill G11 seems to be a re-branded version of this product.

Specs/Facts:
- MIDX6 has on-board rotation sensor, but it's apparently not working in the firmware yet.
- MIDX6 has optional 3G / GPS inside
- MIDX5A is the basic model with no sensor/3G/GPS. (The rest is the same.)
- CPU Runs at 720Mhz stock
- Has HDMI port
- Has a normal 3.5" jack for headphones
- One speaker, and one microphone inside.
- Runs Android 2.1 eclair-update1
- No GPS/3G/Orientation sensor inside
- Linpack score around 4.9 with no mods / clean os.
- Metal top body, plastic bottom
- Mine came with 2x 1300mA battery inside!
- Battery lasts really long, i can run for ~6-7 hours at work with wifi on.

TODO / What's not working: (Updated 20/8/2010)

- SetCPU (fc's after moving slider), waiting for mhuang's expertise
- Can't seem to enter recovery by hardware buttons
- Add more languages (like Dutch!) - Updated NL versions for #348: Launcher.apk, Settings.apk
- Cleanup included languages (Georg77cz is working on cz/cs translation.)
- Custom recovery - We have Clockworkmod working as of 20-8!
- Can't boot into recovery from ADB - (From firmware #348 this is fixed..)
- Factory defaults (Works in #348 and wipes properly using the recovery reboot.)

What's working: (As of firmware release #348)
- Custom recovery (Clockworkmod): Download here
- Calibration (You must hold the stylus at the spot for some time.)
- Rooted!
- Telechips FWDN firmware recovery (via WinXP/2K)
- Telechips USB host booting method with empty(!) nand
- Rotation with 'RotateD' from market
- YouTube HD (Just push the Evo4G Youtube.apk)

Note there are similar models. Visit the HSG website and note the right side button spacing/placement.
Link: HSG Website

The model this topic is about, has the buttons spaced across the right side.
The other model that is not from HSG appears to be non-available from China sellers right now, or not in production yet for unknown reason. (sensor rumours)

Another third model has popped up, it's basically the same hardware in APAD casing with metal back plate.

Quick review
I've used the device for about 3 days now with firmware #297, and it's very fast to use & works like a charm. It has a very solid build quality with a metal top on a thick plastic bottom, making it feel like a quality product. Market worked out-of-the-box with no fuss or hacks. Touchscreen is responsive, but resistive. If you want to slide, push down your finger first, then slide (don't hit-and-run or do a driveby with you finger on the screen).

Battery life is pretty damn good. I've been using it for at least 6-7 hours in one go, with wifi while debugging and ADB and such. The screen is nice & bright, and even if it's a resistive screen it works OK. The main reason for an initial slow reaction from the screen, is that the CPU is downclocked to 36Mhz when you are not doing anything. After the first wipe/slide it goes up to 720Mhz.(Yes, that's 120 Mhz more than the Augen)

Note to posters: Please keep this thread clean. If it's not about rooting or dev, do not post it here please. Thank you!

Hey just barely found your page here I love it. I am new to this generation of tablets, but I am somewhat more familiar to tablets in general as well as android and linux. I am getting ready to orderf the coby kyros mid7015 and I was wondering if you cld point me in the right direction for rooting it and for the custom mods available (if any). I would like to know if anyone has ported a android 2.2 over to it yet as well as if anyone knows if cyanogenmod has a version that might work with it. I ask about cyanogenmod because I currently have that installed with 2.2 on my rooted alltel htc hero with godspeed recovery darchstar edition installed. So I am already rather familiar with it and think it would be a good setup to start with on my new tablet.
Thanks ahead for any help.

The MID7015-4G is a different model to the MID7005-4G (based on X5A) I don't know what the MID7015-4G is based on? It's a different design.

Can you go in the ZONE MESSAGE CENTER under downloads and grab Power 101. There is a benchmark tool called CM3. Run it and make sure no apps are active. Tell me what you get? You should get over 800!

Sieve score = 857 (98)
Loop score = 1018 (2017)
Logic score = 739 (0)
String score = 850 (708)
Float score = 730 (185)
Method score 765 (166650)

Overall score = 820

BTW, I saw in another forum someone said that z4root worked to root their Coby Kyros, so I ran it, and it seemed to run fine, and Tablet rebooted. But, when I try to run apps that need root none work.

If anyone else gets this rooted I'd sure appreciate guidance as to how to do it. Thanks!

It's best to use one that is rooted for the is tablet. X5A is the same one but you need the one that supports G-Sensor. There are some that don't.

Any ideas on how to get adhoc wifi working with these devices? I picked up a MID7015 and it's great for what it is, but without adhoc, it's pretty worthless to me Sad

Yea, I am having the same problem. I want to connect this thing to my HTC EVO Wi-Fi Tether app, and from my understanding it needs a wpa_supplicant ROM mod to be able to do this.

If I could get a ROM with the wpa_supplicant mod so I can connect to the internet via Wi-Fi Tether app on my EVO, and the Google Android Market this thing would be great!

Well I dont Know the full extent of "based on X5A" But I do know that the MID7015
has a Telechips TTC8902 Processor and So I just figured that It would be fairly similar to the MID7005. But if anyone knows any good links or info for the rooting of the MID7015 I would much appreciate it.

You can root the MID7015 with an app called z4root available from applanet. You have to download the applanet app, and search for it there. That's where I found it. This will allow you to run apps like Titanium Backup that require root.

What we need is a rooted ROM though. Rooting does not let you install vending.apk, the Google app marketplace.

Is the z4root a permanent or temporary root on the MID7015? I was reading about it on XDA-developers and it says that when you restart if its a temporary root it sets the system back to how it was.

Well, I just powered off, and back on. I then ran Titanium Backup which requires root, and it ran just fine. So, it would seem as if it is permanent.

I got mine on Black Friday from K-Mart as well. I got the mid7015 Coby Kyros. It is an awesome device.

Here is what I discovered

Coby tech support is worthless!

z4root works like a charm!

Once rooted, if you want to access the device from windows, you will need a little help. Windows cannot find the driver for the device. It just says Andoid Eclair.

Make sure your Kyros is in USB debugging mode. Mine was that way by default.

So you will need to do the following:

1. Download and install The Java Development Kit 6 here (you will need to register on their site first):

https://cds.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/CDS-CDS_Developer-Site/en_US/-/USD/ViewProductDetail-Start?ProductRef=jdk-6u22-oth-JPR@CDS-CDS_Developer

2. Download and unzip the android-sdk-r07-windows.zip file to the C: drive on your computer.

http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html

3. Go to the android-sdk-windows folder that you unzipped

4. Launch SDK Manager.exe

5. Under choose which package to install, click accept all. As a part of what it is downloading, it will download the Android USB drivers. This part will probably take like 30 minutes or more to complete.

6. Once the download is done, close the SDK Manager.

7. You should now see a folder called usb_driver. Open that folder.

8. You will see a file called android_winusb.inf Open that file in notepad.

9. Right underneith the section labeled [Google.NTx86] paste in the following:
; Android Eclair
%SingleAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0C01
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0C02&MI_01
%SingleBootLoaderInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0FFF

10. Save the changes in the android_winusb.inf file

11. Plug in your Kyros device. Windows will still not find the driver for the device, but go into the Device manager, and select Android Eclair, and update driver, browse my computer, let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.

12. Click "Have Disk" and browse to the c:\android-sdk-windows\usb_driver folder. Double click on andoid_winusb.inf.

13. Select Android ADB Interface.

14. It will then come up with some messages about this is unsigned or something, are you sure you want to do this, click yes or continue.

Then it will install the driver and detect the kyros.

Oh and I was using windows 7 when doing the driver install. Window XP should work as well with the have disk option. I will try that later.

You can then access via the adb commands in the c:\android-sdk-windows\tools

Be warned!! You can trash your Kyros if you are not careful. I tried downloading a wpa_supplicant file from another website and it trashed my wifi. Thankfully I backed up the original file prior to making the changes.

I would STRONGLY encourage you to back up the wpa_supplicant file before playing around with AD-Hoc.

MAKE SURE YOUR KYROS IS IN AIRPLANE MODE PRIOR TO DOING THIS!!

To back up the wpa supplicant file do the following (from the c:\android-sdk-windows\tools folder) using the command prompt in windows.

adb shell

cd /system/bin

cp wpa_supplicant wpa_supplicant.bak

If you need to restore the file (because you've just trashed your WIFI with a wpa_supplicant that wasn't designed for the kyros) do the following (from the c:\android-sdk-windows\tools folder) using the command prompt in windows.

adb shell

cd /system/bin

cp wpa_supplicant.bak wpa_supplicant

Then hold the power button down and select power off. Then hold the power and power back on.

I tried several wpa_supplicant files and have yet to find one that works (it usually trashes my wifi)

Enjoy!

I have previously messed up my wpa_supplicant file, and my Wi-Fi is broken.
Any chance you could send me the original file?

After the first wipe/slide it goes up to 720Mhz.(Yes, that's 120 Mhz more than the Augen)

Hey, the custom recovery download isn't working anymore. Can you repost it?

Yeah it's not working for me either. I am sure that if we could get clockwork working, then we would be able to apply .zip updates and flash new mods. At which point it shouldn't be to hard for us to find a version of froyo that will work. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I use Watery Kyros, but I have a 7015. I think the WK was built for that and that's why you're having problems. Never flash a ROM not designed for your device, you run the risk of bricking it!

Can you do a factory/default reset? Does it work when you do that?

Do you have the original firmaware? Maybe flashing that will get you going again.

Good luck!
