HSN Launches Coby Kyros Internet Tablet 7" Android OS 2.1, 800MHz with 1080p HDMI

Post by tipstir on Tue Oct 26, 2010 7:35 pm

WOW!

UPS just dropped this off after ringing my doorbell..
COBY INSPECTION Labels are on the Box I guess they Coby headphone had added.
Turning it on I was right it does say COBY then ANDROID

This is really basic no apps installed, no GE so I see they didn't get the license either. But it really quick I have to install my own
GE into it if I need it. Everything is so huge though. I'll run some additional test. Touchscreen is excellent out of the box
But where the heck is my return shipping label? I just see the one you send to someone not the UPS one.
I guess I'll have to go and print one out on the HSN site if I decided to keep this one or not. Time will only tell.

Inside the other part of the box, I see they give you a glass cleaner cloth.

HDMI to mini HDMI cable
USB Host Cable
USB Cable
Coby Professional Ear Buds
Stylus Pen
Power supply with macro pin connection it sticks out like the epad one does.
35 Free eMusic
40 page manual looks like the one you get when you buy a expensive watch
Warranty Card

Yes! $63, is what I had paid to get it sent out to me. In Nov, Dec and Jan I have to pay $49 for each month, if I decided to keep it. It cost $199.99 plus shipping. No tax on this deal.
If I decided to send it back with enclosed UPS label. I get back my money. No interest charges either. They had sold over 4,000 units on 10/23/10 and only had less than 1,000 yesterday. Now when I go and check the link:

HSN

We're sorry, this product has sold out and is no longer available.

To find a similar item, use our search box or browse our departments located at the top of your screen.

Update: So far all my PowerTools Elite and Mega PowerTools installs perfect. Even that game called Wacko Mole loads find. I wanted to test out the 3D GSensor on RThunder II for Android OS 2.1.
Got to hand to Coby folks this seems much quicker, and I know it's not Rooted but out of the box its 720MHz on TeleChip CPU. All my Videos played that had given me trouble on Pandigital Novel / Tablet Hybrid.
WiFi out of the box had seen my network and the keyboard was accurate not malfunctioning like some tablets I've own so far. I still got the Maylong M-150 heading my way so I'll give that a test spin as I was
edging to test out the new VIA VM8505+.

A full Hardware Reveiw on the Coby later on..

1. Make sure you have external SD card (optional but best to get since the internal only has 2.7GB free)
2. Under Settings (press the M button on the home screen to access settings
3. Select Applications
4. Make sure Unknown Sources is checked! (this is very important) I bet it's not check off
5. Make sure your wireless is setup and work. Test to see that first like this site.
6. On those Force prompt, select wait instead
7. If step 6 doesn't work you have 3 choices: A: call their CS (customer service) or B: return it back to HSN or C: Goto step 8
8. Download the drivers for USB 32-bit or 64-bit and get the SDK Droid Explorer for your Windows PC
9. Connect your KYROS to the PC and then launch DROID Explorer (go here)
10. Now you can uninstall apps or install apps (under Downloads forum thread on this site you have PowerTools, grab the Mega Powertools and use ES File Manager)
11. Now you need to get your hands on AppLIB.apk click on the image of the Applib.apk and it will download the file to your PC
12. Uninstall the old Applib before you install the new version Applib2
13. Follow these additional instructions below (note in your situation you can omit these steps and stop here)

Install / Update the AppsLib application (note for those users with a file manager already)

AppsLib Version 2:

It is recommanded to uninstall previous AppsLib application before installing the new version on your device.

1. To install / update your application you just have to follow the instructions below:
2. Click on the AppsLib icon on the right to download the more recent Appslib application (the file is named AppsLib)
3. Save the Appslib_2.apk file onto your PC's hard drive.
4. If the file extension is NOT "apk", but is "zip" instead, change it to "apk".
5. Transfer the Appslib_2.apk file to the [DOWNLOAD] folder on your device. Unplug your device.
6. Open the File Manager on your tablet, go into the Download folder, and tap twice on the Appslib_2.apk file that you will find there to start the installation.
7. Follow the on-screen instruction to install this newer version of the Appslib applications
8. At the end of the installation, select: "Open".

Now remember you don't have a file manager, so you have to use my first steps!. I don't want to confuse you with additional steps but this is provided here for those who might other situations.

Hi .. I also bought this Coby "Kyros" Internet Tablet. I really like it so far.

My problem is the video player. I get sound but no picture. One of the big selling points for me was being able to stream movies in and then hook up to my TV with the HDMI cable. Any ideas?

Also, how did you install PowerTools Elite and Mega PowerTools? I thought you could only install certain Android Apps. Is there anyway to install other apps besides those in the AppLib?

Any info you can add to this forum I'd applicate because I don't know anything about these tablets! So far. What is rooted/?

Yes I've hooked my up to the HDMI and found out the limitations. No sound through HDMI cable, you need to use 1/8 male to optical out (I have this cable and never use it) I would have to test it though. So you going to have to pipe the sound into external source. Make sure you change the output from none to HDMI to use HDMI cable also it your HDTV is not 1080p change it to 720p. It won't work otherwise. Remember when your finish to change the settings back otherwise you can't view any video on the tablet.

No everything installs. I use my SDHC adapter with microSDHC 16GB Class (4) no issues wall paper loads and changes on the fly. My problem with this device is it lacks menus with features it seems limited.

There are Mega PowerTools has 3 tools packs, extra apps, games and a lot of wallpaper. Which really stand out in this tablet. You can rotate 360 d.

my home screen looks like this:

Yes there are over 1000 apps.. You don't have use market.. APPLIB is very limited I know. The forum here will help find more apps if you look under Cools stuff it has some links that I've uncovered.

I'm so glad I found this site.
I wasn't clear, on the tablet itself I can't even watch youtube. I have audio but not video. Haven't tried it on the TV yet and thanks for that advise.

So no video plays? Meridian Player Pro is in this test pack but just install the Meridian don't install the Youtube it would just mess you up. It's for Android OS 1.6.

Hi Tipstir,

Thanks for the update and the images! I should be getting mine in a few days (I was one of the late batches they were waiting for), have you looked at upgrading your memory to 32GB? The device has 4 GB built in, and is expandable to 32GB. So I assume that you would need a 28GB SD card in order to do this? I could not find one in that size, only 24GB and 32GB. If I use the 32GB, wont that put me over the 32GB limit? 36GB would be nice! Using the 24GB would only give 28GB total. I am trying to locate the colby website for the Kryos and see if the 32GB can be used. If you know or hear of this, please let me know. I emmailed Coby at their support address and am waiting for an answer. I will repost if I hear from them.

Also, Can I download books from my PC in various extensions? (I.e. .lit, .txt .rtf .pdf? I have a collection and would hpoe to be able to use them. I also have mp3 music and video, do you know if they are supported? I will be testing out the Kyros over the next few days and will let you know what I find out.

Thanks! </BLOCKQUOTE>

One last thing, can you watch shows from Hulu.com, or other online movies/show sites, and/or movies from Netflix? (Netflix requires Microsofts Silverlight, so I dont have much hope it can!)

Thanks

Remember you can't watch flash on this device. You can watch MP4 and FLV and such. If those sites support Android or have some app to install for android then you could do it.

Ahhh, no flash - That hurts... The Kyros does come with a video player, hopefully they will add more codecs to the current range. I located some media players that supports a wider range of codecs. But i am not sure of they are for tablets or just phones. They are built for Android, so i wonder if they are usable. They say the best is the RockPlayerBase, it was a beta, but should be out now. They also mention Astroplayer, As soon as i get the Kyros and get it set up I will see if they are in the Android Market. Here is a link about Rockplayer:

Did you see my earlier post about the 32GB SD? I would guess the 32SD card can be used since the onboard is a flash drive? i want to know as I am waiting to buy the one that will work with this device.

Thanks

It goes like this:

800MHz CPU (out of the box 720MHz)
256MB of DDR2 RAM
4GB IS (internal storage with 2.7GB free for user)
32GB ES (expanded storage with 0GB you have to buy 2 through 32GB)

That's it.. I have 16GB ES in my right now Class (4)

Docs to Go is available in the Powertool Packages Doc to Go Full I am testing it so that will appear in the next PowerXXX Collection.
Docs to Go full has PDF reader and reader MS Office files.

All the popular readers are in the PowerTools even Kindle well you see the picture. MP3 is supported and I have music videos I got off Youtube not how to do it. Now I can pull off HD videos since this device supports it.

Hey DPRapter -

I got mine a few days ago and I purchased a 32gb storage card on Amazon, works like a pro!! Here is the link to the one I purchase if you want to go for one that has no issues.

http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-Ultimate-Speed-Memory-TS32GSDHC10/dp/B003P3MCXW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1288729139&sr=8-2-catcorr

I'm glad I found this website I was wondering about getting the additional apps since it doesn't come with Android Market.

Yeah I used that brand prior on 4GB (150x) cost was $33 bucks off Newegg still have it though. The price of the 32GB is coming as the 64GB are coming out slowly. You look under Cool Android STuff forum thread here for what you seek.

Yep! HSN charged this below on 10/23/10

Be warned, that even though it has 256MB of RAM I only show 140MB and after you do things it drops to 37 to 40MB free.
Becomes sluggish and can freeze up on you. It's a fun device for play HDMI videos from YOutube I had downloaded last night but then it froze on me.
Why because it was low on RAM.

I just registered to let anyone who's thinking of ordering from these guys know that they have neither the 4GB or 8GB versions in stock. I spoke with an Adorama rep today, and he stated they're on order and should be in stock "in around 10 days" (today is 11/14). Nowhere on either product page does it indicate this item is a preorder, which is not cool and borderline sketch. If you unwittingly placed an order, you would've been waiting for WEEKS at best.

Also, I can't find any info on the supposed 8GB model anywhere. There's no reference to it even on Coby's Website. Anyone have any info on this thing? I was wondering if anything else was updated beside the storage, like maybe a multitouch screen like the newer X5A's have. If it's just 4 extra gigs of storage, I don't think that's really worth the $20 premium.

There is only two models

MID70005-4G
MID70015-4G

Both are the same except appearance, weight and screen fonts are not large.
Hopefully the battery issue is also taken care of in the second model

4GB storage IS with only 2.7GB free almost 3GB
32GB for ES

I've use Adorama prior for things, they like to ship out the good at odd days. To me it takes longer or process the order.

Here's the 8GB model on Adorama's Website I was talking about (MID7005-8G):

http://www.adorama.com/CYMID70058G.html?utm_source=gbase&utm_medium=Shopping%20Site&utm_campaign=Other&utm_term=Other

Note that they finally added some stuff about it being a preorder. lol.

Anyway, I'm wondering what this is exactly since Coby's Website makes no mention of it.

I just bought the MID70015-4G yesterday! I like it so far...but one of the reasons I bought it was for Skype. Does anyone know if Skype is compatible on this device? I've played around for hours on skype's website and tried plugging my device into my computer and downloading Skype onto it from my PC...but no luck. Also I would like to know how to get more apps, because like you said tipstir Appslib IS very limited. I was wondering how to get the Mega Powertools you mentioned. I'm sure it is on your website somewhere, but it is 5:36am and I am very tired >.<

Does that one have a file manager on it? If not you'll need to use Applib to download a file manger so you can go into ZONE MESSAGE CENTER ten under downloads grab POWER 101 an enjoy that also has other Market replacements.

Where did you get MID70015-4G from?

I'll be putting together a PowerSkype package it has all bunch.

I do not have a file manager, unless it came pre-installed with one. Is there a certain one you recommend? and I got it from work! I work in K-mart electronics department lol. So my tablet is compatible with a form of Skype? I was going to return it if it cannot run skype, although I really like it

See you have to use the AppLIB and type out File Manager there is one with a Blue/Yellow icon That's the one to use.

I like ES File Manager it's better and easy to use. Again onces you have a file manager you can install apps. Under ZONE MESSAGE CENTER under downloads grab Power 101. Everything is there. But you still need a file manager to do anything.

Don't tell me Coby is old at Kmart now?

Please help! I bought this for My husband for Christmas and was trying to fix it before giving it to him, but I am having problems. I can't seem to download the driver. I found the link and downloaded it to my computer, but when I click on it to open the link Windows ask what program to use to open. I don't know what to do to actually get the driver to download. I'm using Windows Vista if it makes a difference. Also, do I have to have the Micro Sd card to download the file manager and applib fix? I can't buy one til next paycheck. Thanks for the help. Oh, and I DID get it at K-Mart on Black Fri. Was supposed to be an Augen, but they had The Coby Kyros MID7015 instead.
