How do i connect 2 pcs using wireless with ESR-9850 and Dlink DIR-655 ?

Post by Moogle Stiltzkin on Fri Jun 11, 2010 12:59 am

As the title says, i have 2 routers (the ESR-9850 is on it's way still) and need to setup wifi for my home network.

Floor 1
-------
My desktop pc. My internet connection is connected to my Innacomm W3100 Adsl modem (bridged mode) which is then connected to my ESR-9850. I will then use wired ethernet connection from it to my desktop pc. Another ethernet will be connected to my Aztech homeplug. That is about it.

- laptop in living room (i use a Aztech homeplug so no worry about wireless here. Can also use wireless as well.)

Floor 2
--------
My 2nd desktop pc. I want to put my Dlink DIR-655 at this location. How should it be setup to receive wireless transmissions from the ESR-9850 1 floor below it ?

DIR-655 has to be hardwired from ESR-9850.

The above is how I had mine as DIR-655 as AP prior.

Like with my two ESR-9850 the SSID is the same for both. Wireless Mode: 802.11b/g/n (mix) and the channel is manual. ECO is also turned off. I don't know about the new firmware if it fixes the power saver issue with the wireless. By default the have that disable anyway. To bad you didn't buy a second ESR-9850 you would have some nice routing speeds and double the RAM. Which hardware version of DIR-655 do you have?

Mine is the A3 same blue the only difference is the Gig Controller used has a larger Packet Buffer of 832KB. In the A2 it's 96KB. A1 was the green amber with the falling off heat sink issue.

I had re-mod my shown below and added TP-LINK N300 card:

ESR9850 basic PCB it has the same Realtek Gig PCI Controller found in my DIR-655, but 655 uses a large heat sink on the gig controller chip where the 9850 doesn't. Ceramic type on ESR9850 instead of aluminum on DIR-655. SNB has FCC Photo ID but it's nothing to brag about just basic.

DIR-655 does get hot mine did. ESR-9850 doesn't get hot with the ceramic heat-sink Realtek Gig PCI Controller with 832KB is the best Gig Controller around for these Wireless Routers pretty much all brands use it except Cisco Linksys an etc. Your DIR-655 A2 uses Vitsx brand chipset.

If you're using the DIR-615 as the main DHCP Sever then invoke and reserved the static IP you give the DIR-655 which will be a AP. To make it AP you need to disable DHCP, NAT.

So DIR-615 is your DHCP main, then the DIR-655 is your AP primary then the ESR-9850 is going to be used as what?

the dir-615 will be changed to a basic switch that does vlan tagging. the ESR-9850 will be attached to the 615 and do the actual routing and wireless.

But for now since my esr-9850 hasn't yet arrived, i'm using the crappy 615 temporarily as my main.

Anyway a friend told me that if i wanted to use a router for PC B to connect to other wireless networks, it has to have Wireless Client mode which he says only DD-WRT firmware routers have.

So if i configure the DIR-655 as you suggested, would it then act like a wireless client mode ??

Example on my laptop, it has an icon to connect to wireless and it shows all the wireless networks available. But for the DIR-655 attached desktop B, i don't see anything like that.

Hardwired to DIR-655 for wireless access point
ESR-9850 can be use AP, Router or Repeater (100% wireless extender) but needs AP to connect to using site survey.
DD-WRT to make it so you can connect to devices as Wireless Bridge but only routers that support such features
Are you sharing your network with others? Other than your dwelling?

Post by Moogle Stiltzkin on Wed Jun 16, 2010 3:46 pm

Uh i don't want to use the DIR-655 as a AP. The purpose of the ESR-9850 will be as a replacement AP main router.

I was thinking i could use the DIR-655 as a wireless client, but after googling for a few hours, this doesn't seem possible.

I'm now looking into 2 possibilities.

1. wireless N adapter

2. dd-wrt / tomato firmware supported router which would then allow me to use wireless client mode.

For option 1, i only know that i would prefer a usb stick solution, but i am unsure which would go right with my ESR-9850.

The 2nd option may be a bit pricier then the first option, but maybe a little more worth while since i can then use dd-wrt or tomato which have wireless client mode for the router they support.

The router i was looking at was Asus RT-N16 which sadly cost double the price of the ESR-9850 that i will be using for my main router AP bounce the specs look good, but price wise i don't think i can afford this as i am looking for a cheap good solution like the ESR-9850 but supports dd-wrt and tomato. The WNDR3700 is also equally expensive (actually more then the RT-N16) with a similar performance (less maximum simultaneous connections though hm...)

The next choice would be the Asus RT-N12, which i saw supports dd-wrt and tomato bear mod. Unfortunately i could not find any reviews showing the throughput and maximum simultaneous connections tests scratch

This is the price list i found

ESR-9850 @ RM273

RT-N12 @ RM199

RT-N16 @ RM479

Wireless N 300 mbps usb adapter @ Rm80-150 roughly

ESR9850
WAN to LAN Throughput = 619.3
LAN to WAN Throughput = 640.0
Total Simultaneous Throughput = 740.3
Maximum Simultaneous Connections = 19,721
notes: awesome router sadly no wireless client mode.

ASUS RT-N12
WAN to LAN Throughput = unknown
LAN to WAN Throughput = unknown
Total Simultaneous Throughput = unknown
Maximum Simultaneous Connections = unknown
notes: 100 mb ethernet ports >-<;

ASUS RT-N13U
WAN to LAN Throughput = unknown
LAN to WAN Throughput = unknown
Total Simultaneous Throughput = unknown
Maximum Simultaneous Connections = unknown
notes: 100 mb ethernet ports. Not supported by teddy bear tomato :{

ASUS RT-N16
WAN to LAN Throughput = 93.4
LAN to WAN Throughput = 93.6
Total Simultaneous Throughput = 142.9
Maximum Simultaneous Connections = 200
notes: neck to neck with the WNDR3700 for being the top 1-2nd place router for third party firmware router capable. Sadly cost more then my ESR-9850 !!! Probably not worth the cost just for the purpose to use as a wireless client router only.

ASUS has several cheap routers with impressive specs, and several boast being dd-wrt capable:

ASUS WL-520gU -- Has 240MHz processor with 4MB Flash and 32MB RAM
ASUS RT-N12 -- Has 300MHz processor with 4MB Flash and 32MB RAM
ASUS RT-N10 -- Has 300MHz processor with 4MB Flash and 16MB RAM
ASUS RT-N16 -- Has 480MHz processor with 32MB Flash and 128MB RAM -- a serious router but much more expensive

Source: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r24155089-FIOS-Router-recommendation

Asus hasn't released anything to stand out from the pack. Their 11n lineup consists of 4 routers and a combo modem/router:

WL-500W: Comparable to Linksys's entry-level WRT150N.
RT-N11: Ultra-low budget router. Amlogic CPU and 1T2R radio.
RT-N13: Comparable to Belkin's entry-level F5D8233-4.
RT-N15: Same CPU/radio as the N13, but the switch is gigabit.

So before i go spend some moolah today on the RT-N12, could i get your opinion if you know a better alternative scratch

My criteria

- cheap
- performance value (something like esr-9850 but can use dd-wrt and tomato bear mod)
http://www.linksysinfo.org/forums/showthread.php?t=63587
- purpose of router: to use as wireless client mode to give my pc upstairs wireless access to my ESR-9850 AP which is located 1 floor below (temporarily using the Dlink DIR-615 as the wireless AP main router for now until my ESR arrives in a couple of days)

What about TP-LINK TLWR1043N that uses DD-WRT

Atheros 9134 I think?
400Mhz
32MB of DDR RAM
832KB for Realtek PCI-Gig Controller
8MB Flash
5,000 MSC or with DDWRT 65,000 (?)

20dBm = 100mW for Wireless
3x 3dBi for ANT
Has USB port for USB HDD doesn't need to be used with software so all network Pcs can access it.

Another one is Level one Max-N WBR6020 has 300,000 max connections but does not do Gig ports.

Linksys tend to overheat if worked to hard.

Naice but both not available for me from the local shop pale

My bro wants to just buy one today from what is available.

ASUS RT-N12 -- Has 300MHz processor with 4MB Flash and 32MB RAM
ASUS RT-N13U
ASUS RT-N15: Same CPU/radio as the N13, but the switch is gigabit.
ASUS RT-N16 -- Has 480MHz processor with 32MB Flash and 128MB RAM -- a serious router but much more expensive

These ones are. RT-N16 is out of the question because of price. so for the other 3 which one of those do you suggest i should get?

RT-N12 is confirmed to work for bear tomato mod. But 100mb ethernet ports. Could not find info regarding the performance, so that is a mystery until after i buy ...

RT-N13U good maximum simultaneous connections. Also 100mb ethernet ports. Also not sure if tomato or dd-wrt is supported.

RT-N15, Could not find info regarding the performance, so that is a mystery until after i buy ... supposedly this one has gigabyte ports but i am not sure about that. Not sure either if it works for tomato and dd-wrt.

How about WZR-HP-G300NH from Buffalo that runs DD-WRT (800mW) almost 1 watt for wireless would make a great AP but it should have the features you seek. Find one of these and it works nice with DD-WRT (Linksys WRT310N) I was able to flash it with DD-WRT for a buddy. I didn't see any issues with it.

Anyway it seems i am getting the RT-N12 because of cheap price and can use dd-wrt or tomato bear mod.

the bear mod is better then the original tomato since it supports way more max simultaneous connections for starters, and others.

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Tomato_%28firmware%29#Teddy_Bear_Mod

http://www.linksysinfo.org/forums/showthread.php?t=63587

Also why i prefer tomato over dd-wrt is the simplicity of it. Also it has 2 client modes.

Client mode, two ways

In fact, Tomato supports two types of client modes: wireless client mode and wireless Ethernet bridge mode. In bridge mode, the wired clients share the same subnet with the primary or "host" router. DHCP is assigned by the primary router and simply passed through by the client router.

In wireless client mode, clients make up a separate subnet from the host router. The DHCP pool is assigned by the client router. This mode is the easier of the two to setup, so we'll start here.

Source: http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials/article.php/3810281/How-to-Set-Tomato-Firmware-for-Wireless-Client-Modes.htm

So unless you disagree with this, i'll be getting it later today bounce

Bleh my family already bought the zyxel nwd210n wireless N 300 mb adapter. Signal seems good, the bandwidth seems about spot on when testing on speedtest.net

Not sure about p2p though cause not sure how to test for that

The lan to lan sucked bad. Streaming 1080p HD is slow and stuttery that there is no point to is which is a shame.

But they only wanted internet connectivity which is does alright meh Mad

I noticed that my desktop a lan to lan speed even ethernet connected is only 10mb. So it's the dir-615 that has shitty lan to lan speed.

How are you streaming 1080p HD by wired or wireless. I can do both here so the ESR-9850 works great in that department. My videos on Youtube are now 1080p HD with AC3 digital sound. cheers

Well this is my current setup.

Fiber Home optic modem > DIR-615 (AP + main router) > RJ45 ethernet cables to the QNAP TS-509 Pro (where my 1080p content are) and my Desktop A

zyxel nwd210n wireless N usb adapter (this is wireless connected to the DIR-615's SSID which is not hidden by the way set to AES encryption WPA2) > Desktop B

The signal bar is 4/5

Download and install inSSIDer then it on your adapter and tell me what you get for the RSSi should be -xxdBm. The lower the number the better.
