ALTERNATE (NEWBIE-FRIENDLY) GUIDE FOR ROOTING AND GOOGLE MARKET INSTALL ON WINDOWS - NO SPECIAL DRIVERS OR ADB COMMANDS NEEDED

Post by j0shy81 on Sun Dec 26, 2010 2:00 am

(This is a repost of the guide that I posted on about page 8 of the other thread... I have moved it over here to clean things up a bit and I also edited it to include a backup of the tablet)

Here is my guide for using "the Mac method" on a Windows PC to update, root, and install the "Google Experience" on your Coby 7015. Major, MAJOR credit goes to lschroeder and Jason Andreas for posting the original versions of these directions. I am just taking them and adapting them for Windows. I am going to try to make things as step-by-step as possible for all of the newcomers out there.

THINGS YOU WILL NEED:
- Your Coby Kyros 7015 Tablet
- A PC running Windows (I am using Windows XP for these directions... there may be small cosmetic differences on Vista or 7)
- A MicroSD card (I am using a 4 GB card, but the device will take anything up to 16GB I believe)
- The USB cable to hook the tablet to the PC
- The charger cable (I suggest either having the device fully charged or having it plugged in as you go through this process)

NOTES BEFORE WE START:
- I am assuming that you are starting with a clean, unrooted tablet. If you are partway through the process, you may be able to just pick up partway through these directions, but there is no guarantee. If you have already rooted then you may want to unroot using z4root, do a factory reset, then start from the beginning.

- DISCLAIMER: I DID THIS PROCESS FOR MY OWN TABLET ON A MAC. When I was reading through the Mac directions, I realized that all the Mac was being used for was to transfer files to the tablet. Based on my experience on using my Android phone with a PC, I figured the directions should also work with a Windows machine, so I decided to write this guide.

PART 1: PERFORMING THE COBY UPDATE

(If you have already performed the update, then you can skip to Part 2)

1. Go to the Coby website (www.cobyusa.com) and go to the product page for the Kyros MID7015. Scroll down the page until you see the Downloads section and click on the link to download the firmware update, which should be called update.zip. If it asks you where to save the file, save it to your desktop for easy access. Otherwise, it might save to My Documents\Downloads or My Documents\My Downloads.

2. Plug the Coby tablet into the USB port on your computer. You should see 3 different messages pop up at the top of the tablet's screen. One is for USB debugging, One is for internal storage, and one is for external storage.

3. With your finger, pull down the top bar on the tablet's screen. Select the option to turn on EXTERNAL storage (the MicroSD card) and click Mount when the box comes up.

4. At this point, a window may automatically open on your PC showing the contents of the MicroSD card. If it doesn't pop up automatically, go to My Computer and find it under "Removable Drives." Depending on the configuration of your computer, the drive it appears as will vary.

5. Once you have the window for the MicroSD card open on your PC, drag the update.zip file onto the MicroSD card. Make sure it is on the ROOT of the drive, not in one of the folders on the drive. Wait for the transfer to complete.

6. Go to the system tray on your Windows PC and click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon. It looks like a drive with a green arrow above it. Click on the "Safely Remove" option for the drive corresponding to the MicroSD card. You will get a message saying it is now safe to remove the drive from your computer, but don't remove it yet! You still have to turn off storage on the tablet.

7. On the tablet, pull down the top menu bar and click on "Turn off USB Storage (external)." When the box comes up, click on "Turn Off." Unplug the tablet from your PC.

8. Turn off the tablet by holding the power button and then selecting "Power Off" when the menu comes up.

9. Now you need to enter the recovery console. To do this, hold both the silver return button on the front of the tablet AND the power button until you see the green Android robot standing next to a warning triangle. When you see these logos, let go of both buttons.

10. Press the silver return button by itself. The recovery menu should appear. To navigate the recovery menu, you use the home and menu buttons on the tablet. Home scrolls up and menu scrolls down.

11. Use the menu button to scroll down to "wipe data/factory reset." Use the silver return button to select this option. Another screen will appear. Use the menu button to scroll down to "yes -- delete all user data" and press the silver return button to select this option. The device will wipe the data and then it will return to the main recovery screen.

12. From the main recovery screen, use the menu button to scroll down to "apply sdcard/update.zip" Use the silver return button to select this option. The update process should begin. When the update process is complete, the tablet will reboot.

13. The Coby update is complete! I would suggest recalibrating the screen before proceeding with the rest of this process.

PART 2: SETTING UP YOUR KYROS

1. A few system options must be set for this process to work correctly. From the main menu, press Settings, Applications, make sure Unknown sources is checked.
Press Development, and make sure that USB Debugging is enabled. Both of these should be enabled by default, but we need to make sure.

2. You will need access to Wi-Fi to install apps on the device that are required for this process. Turn on your Wi-Fi by going to Settings, then Wireless & Networks. Check the box for Wi-Fi. Go to Wi-Fi settings and select your Wi-Fi access point.

3. Once your Wi-Fi is active, open AppsLib (the Market replacement) from the home screen on the tablet. Press the magnifying glass icon in the top right corner to bring up the Search box. In the search box, type appinstaller and press search. When the results come up, click on appInstaller and install it. Close AppsLib and return to your home screen.

PART 3: ROOTING THE KYROS

We will use an application called z4Root to "root" the tablet. Rooting a device allows full administrator access to all files and programs. This is a good and a bad thing. It is good because we can add programs that aren't normally available to a regular user. It is also bad because you can delete files that you shouldn’t…meaning you could kill your tablet if you mess around.

1. From your Windows PC, download z4Root. You can either download it to your desktop, or it might be a good idea to create a specific folder for all Android-related items.

Z4Root can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953

(NOTE: You will have to create an account on the XDA-Developers forum to be able to download this file. XDA-Developers are the people behind a lot of cool Android mods, so having an account on their site is actually a good thing.)

2. Plug the Coby tablet into the USB port on your computer. You should see 3 different messages pop up at the top of the tablet's screen. One is for USB debugging, One is for internal storage, and one is for external storage. We need to use the INTERNAL storage this time.

3. With your finger, pull down the top bar on the tablet's screen. Select the option to turn on INTERNAL storage (the tablet's built-in memory) and click Mount when the box comes up.

4. At this point, a window may automatically open on your PC showing the contents of the tablet's internal memory. If it doesn't pop up automatically, go to My Computer and find it under "Removable Drives." Depending on the configuration of your computer, the drive it appears as will vary.

5. Once you have the window for the tablet's internal memory open on your PC, drag the z4root.1.3.0.apk file onto the tablet. Make sure it is on the ROOT of the drive, not in one of the folders on the drive. Wait for the transfer to complete.

6. Go to the system tray on your Windows PC and click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon. It looks like a drive with a green arrow above it. Click on the "Safely Remove" option for the drive corresponding to the tablet's internal storage. You will get a message saying it is now safe to remove the drive from your computer, but don't remove it yet! You still have to turn off storage on the tablet.

(NOTE: We installed the image of z4Root on the tablet's internal storage. We did this because our appInstaller program looks for it internally rather then on the MicroSD card.)

7. On the tablet, pull down the top menu bar and click on "Turn off USB Storage (internal)." When the box comes up, click on "Turn Off." Unplug the tablet from your PC.

8. On the tablet, pull open the application screen. Depending on which way you are holding the tablet, this will be the gray tab that appears on either the right or the bottom of the screen. You grab it and drag it to open it. Run the appInstaller program, which should appear in your applications menu. Once appInstaller opens, you should see z4Root. Click on z4Root to install it.

(NOTE: This procedure is called side-loading an app. You can use this for any .apk file that you find on the Web. Use with caution for unknown apps. I would recommend that you research an app before attempting to side-load it on your Kyros.)

9. Z4Root should now be installed. From your applications menu, launch z4Root. Z4Root will open. Press Permanent Root. Once it is done rooting, it will reboot your Kyros.

10. Congratulations! Your tablet is now rooted and YOU are in complete control (not some corporation) of its software. Now we will move on to the true Android-modding.

PART 4: DOWNLOADING CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY AND THE "GOOGLE EXPERIENCE" PACKAGE

1. We now need to download recovery.img on our Windows PC. The file is stored on a site called SendSpace. If you have never used SendSpace before, pay attention to my instructions below, after the link. Make sure to save the file to your desktop or to the folder you created for Android-related stuff.

Recovery.img can be found here:
http://androidtabletzone.the-talk.net/go/aHR0cDovL3d3dy5zZHNwL2ZpbGUvdmt2Nnl6

Click on the link to SendSpace that appears underneath the ad box. On the next page, click on the plain button that says "REGULAR DOWNLOAD." On the page that appears, there may be a lot of confusing links (mostly ads) that we don't want to click on. We are looking for the place where it says "Download Link: recovery.img" The filename for recovery.img should appear in blue. Click on this blue link to actually download the file.

2. We also need to download the zip file that contains the full "Google Experience" (Market, Maps, GMail, etc) for our tablet. This file is stored on a different storage site called MediaFire. If you have never used MediaFire before, pay attention to my instructions below, after the link. Make sure to save the file to your desktop or to the folder you created for Android-related stuff.

The file (gapps-passion-EPE54B-signed.zip) can be found here:
http://androidtabletzone.the-talk.net/go/aHR0cDovL3d3dy5tZGZyLz9tam1tZm1tMGpleg==

Click on the link to MediaFire that appears underneath the ad box. On the next page, there should be a picture of a hard disk with a green arrow and a link next to it that says "Click here to start download.." This is the actual download link. Click on it to download gapps-passion-EPE54B-signed.zip to your computer.

3. Now we need to transfer the files to the tablet. Plug the Coby tablet into the USB port on your computer. You should see 3 different messages pop up at the top of the tablet's screen. One is for USB debugging, One is for internal storage, and one is for external storage.

4. With your finger, pull down the top bar on the tablet's screen. Select the option to turn on EXTERNAL storage (the MicroSD card) and click Mount when the box comes up.

5. At this point, a window may automatically open on your PC showing the contents of the MicroSD card. If it doesn't pop up automatically, go to My Computer and find it under "Removable Drives." Depending on the configuration of your computer, the drive it appears as will vary.

6. Once you have the window for the MicroSD card open on your PC, drag both recovery.img and gapps-passion-EPE54B-signed.zip onto the MicroSD card. Make sure it is on the ROOT of the drive, not in one of the folders on the drive. Wait for the transfer to complete.

8. On the tablet, pull down the top menu bar and click on "Turn off USB Storage (external)." When the box comes up, click on "Turn Off." Unplug the tablet from your PC.

PART 5: USING A TERMINAL APP ON THE KYROS

1. First we need to download and install our Terminal Emulator. Open AppsLib from the home screen on the tablet. Press the magnifying glass icon in the top right corner to bring up the Search box. In the search box, type Terminal Emulator and press search. When the results come up, scroll down until you find Terminal Emulator by Jack Palevich. Install this app. Close AppsLib.

2. Drag open your applications menu and start Terminal Emulator. You should see a blue screen with a command prompt. If the touch keyboard is not already visible on the screen, press the menu button on the tablet and click "Toggle Soft Keyboard" to bring it up. Now we need to type some terminal commands:

type su followed by a return

(NOTE: After you do this su command, the prompt should change from a $ to a # and you may get a message about superuser. This lets you know that you now are in root mode.)

type flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img followed by a return
type reboot recovery followed by a return

3. The tablet should now reboot into the ClockworkMod Recovery menu. Now all we need to do is create a backup and install the Google Experience!

PART 6: MAKING A BACKUP AND INSTALLING THE "GOOGLE EXPERIENCE"

1. You should now be looking at the ClockworkMod Recovery menu. In this menu, the home button scrolls down and the menu button is used to select options.

2. First we need to create a backup of the current system. This can be used as a fall-back in case anything goes wrong. The backup image will be stored on the MicroSD card.

3. Press the home button until "backup and restore" is selected and press menu to select this option.

4. On the backup and restore menu, the "backup" option should already be selected. Press menu to select this option. ClockworkMod Recovery will create a full backup image of your current tablet system. This may take a few minutes. When it is complete, it will return you to the original ClockworkMod Recovery menu.

5. Press the home button until "install zip from sd card" is selected and press menu to select this option.

6. Press the home button until "choose zip from sd card" is selected and press menu to select this option.

7. Press the home button until gapps-passion-EPE54B-signed.zip is selected and press menu to select this option.

8. Press the home button until "Yes – Install gapps-passion-EPE54B-signed.zip" is selected and press menu to select this option.

9. The tablet should now install the Market and the rest of the Google Experience.

10. Once the install is done, it will say "Install from sd card complete." Press the silver return button on the front of the tablet. "Reboot system now" should be highlighted. Press the menu button to select this option.

11. The Kyros should now reboot. You will see a Wizard appear. Go through the Wizard

12. You now have the Android Market and the rest of the Google Experience installed on your Kyros!! YAY!!

See my later post in this thread (POST-MARKET INSTALL NOTES) for a list of apps that you will have to update MANUALLY to get them to work with the Market.

Hopefully this guide will work well for everyone and will help some Android newbies out there. Once again, HUGE thanks go to the authors of the original PC and Mac instructions, lschroeder and Jason Andreas. I may also make another (shorter!) post detailing some good apps to look for once the market is installed.

Merry Christmas everyone and welcome to all of the new tablet owners who are about to flood this site!

Later,
Josh

Re: ALTERNATE (NEWBIE-FRIENDLY) GUIDE FOR ROOTING AND GOOGLE MARKET INSTALL ON WINDOWS - NO SPECIAL DRIVERS OR ADB COMMANDS NEEDED

Post by j0shy81 on Sun Dec 26, 2010 2:04 am

Once you are done rooting and installing the Google Experience on your Coby Kyros, here are some tips and some things to keep in mind:

POST-MARKET INSTALL NOTES:

- You should leave the utilities used in the process (z4Root, appInstaller, Terminal Emulator) installed on the tablet. They may come in handy in the future for troubleshooting and for installing any other cool mods that may become available.

- Apps that were installed using AppsLib, included on the tablet, or included in the Google Experience package will not show up on the "My Apps" screen on the Market because they were not officially installed using the Market. To fix this, search for these apps and install the latest versions from the Market. Apps you will need to do this for include:

appInstaller
Terminal Emulator (search for Android Terminal Emulator)
Aldiko (search for Aldiko Book Reader)
Google Maps
Facebook for Android
Google Goggles
Street View on Google Maps
Amazon MP3
Google Voice

- You should get a Task Killer app to kill background tasks and free up as much memory as possible. This will make your tablet seem A LOT faster. Most people on this forum use Advanced Task Killer Pro, but I have also used TasKiller Free on my Android phone.

See my upcoming "Suggested Apps" post for some more ideas on great apps to download.

Hope this helps,
Josh

Here are instructions on how to both unroot and factory reset the tablet if you are partway through the process and want to completely start over:

UNROOTING THE TABLET

Z4Root has an "un-root" option.

1. Open z4Root from you applications menu.

2. If you wait a few seconds, a dialog should come up asking for superuser access. Allow the superuser access.

3. The menu options will change to "Re-root" and "Un-root" Select "Un-root" and the program should remove all files related to the root and the reboot.

PERFORMING A FACTORY RESET

WARNING - THIS WILL DELETE ANY CHANGES YOU HAVE MADE TO THE DEVICE. IT WILL BE LIKE YOU JUST TOOK IT OUT OF THE BOX.

1. First we will delete all user data on the device. To do this, go to Settings from the home screen. Click on "Privacy" and then click on "Factory Data Reset." Go through the data reset process. This will remove all personal data from the device.

2. Now you need to enter the recovery console. To do this, hold both the silver return button on the front of the tablet AND the
power button until you see the green Android robot standing next to a warning triangle. When you see these logos, let go of both buttons.

3. Press the silver return button by itself. The recovery menu should appear. To navigate the recovery menu, you use the
home and menu buttons on the tablet. Home scrolls up and menu scrolls down.

5. When it returns to the main recovery screen, "reboot system now" should be the option selected. Use the silver return button to select this option. The tablet will reboot.

That's it! This should return everything to an unmodified state and should allow you to "start over" if you have had a lot of trouble with this process.

Hope this helps,
Josh

The file (gapps-passion-EPE54B-signed.zip) can be found here:
http://androidtabletzone.the-talk.net/go/aHR0cDovL3d3dy5tZGZyLz9tam1tZm1tMGpleg==

Later,
Josh

Someone had this same issue over on the other market thread. The only thing I can think of is that your recovery.img file was somehow corrupted or incomplete from the download. You could try redownloading it and then recopying it onto the MicroSD card. Other than that, I don't know what could be causing it.

Any suggestions Arc or Willy?

Hope this helps,
Josh

Crystal try to change the screen to Portrait or get a USB Keyboard, you need to accept the SU terms on the Emulator..you will not see the prompt on Landscape because the onscreen keyboard is on top.

I googled the apk from different websites...the emulator you can downloaded from here because the applib was not working I could not get the AppsINsta.apk...so what I did is downloaded Droidexplorer and installed the z4root from there.

I got the same thing, see if the $ change to #...mine was
not changing because I did not accept the permission pop up from the emulator,
read my response to crystallj7266 to see how you can
do that.

Thank you worked like a charm it was the keyboard in the way.

I have one more question? I have put everything on a 2gb card and have a 16 gb on the way. If I transfer everything to the new card do you think all apps will work, or do you think I should redo it all over again?

It was the space in the term
you all did not tell us it had to have them to work. Sad
I found it on a diff forum. The red is what you type.
$ su enter
==space===================space

# mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh /system/etc/install recovery.sh.bak enter
=
=============space

==================|
# flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img enter

# reboot recovery enter

$ type su then enter
the $ will change to # if you accp. the su
then type mv space then /system/ect/install-recover.sh /system/ect/install-recovery.sh.bak then enter. you must have a space between mv and /system. this is to make the recovery stick.
Then type flash_image recovery space /sdcard/recovery.img then enter. It has to have the space between flash_image recovery and /sdcard.
and it will take alittle bit for the # to come up.
then type reboot recovery.
It should reboot into clockw.
Hope this works it did for me it all works cool.

Hi All Newbie here....
I bought my Coby 7015 a couple of weeks ago and have been browsing around here since....very nice website for tablets...keep it going...
I have rooted my Coby and that is all...(of course I did the Coby update.
I noticed that the (google experience file~gapps-passion-EPE54B-signed.zip) installs several apps if you look in the zip file under the folder system/apps. And also noted in previous posts that these apps will not show under the market as installed apps. Can I not install most of these apps and only install the bare minimum to get the market going? By deleteing all the extra apps in that folder in the zip file? If so does anybody know which ones to remove or leave in the folder? I can only guess.
Thanks in advance...
Jim

Thougt you migh want to know that this method works as equally well under Fedora (Linux) as well.

I'm curious, would this method work on tablets other than the coby 7005 and 7015? Of course you'll need a version of Clockwork for the other tablet, but the general method would still hold true, wouldn't it?

Here are my questions:

1. If the extra line listed here is necessary to complete the process, shouldn't it be included in the full instructions? Question

2. This is my second Kryos ( had to return the first ) and it appears to already include the update compared to my first Kyros. The system info on this one:

firmware version: 2.1-update1
kernel version: 2.6.29 Root android 2.1
build number: MID7015 1.6a_20101124-3

How can I tell if I need to go thru the update process again, doesn't appear as if I need to do that? Thanks!

Thanks, it worked great! The only thing I had to change was : Mine didn't find flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img but when I changed the path to
flash_image recovery /nand/recovery.img
it worked fine, did a
complete backup, installed Market and everything. When i saw that touch
the android screen I knew it was all good!
Any great apps to recommend?

That's because you screwed up when you copied the recovery.img file to the Kyros.

You copied it to the root of the built-in 4-gig internal memory (/nand) rather than to the root of the micro sd card (/sdcard).

I found it on a diff forum. The red is what you type.
$ su enter
==space===================space
====|=========================|
# mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh /system/etc/install recovery.sh.bak enter
=
=============space

==================|
# flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img enter

# reboot recovery enter

$ type su then enter
the $ will change to # if you accp. the su
then type mv space then /system/ect/install-recover.sh /system/ect/install-recovery.sh.bak then enter. you must have a space between mv and /system. this is to make the recovery stick.
Now if we can find a fix for angry birds. with the words not working with the white boxes.

Here are my questions:

1. If the extra line listed here is necessary to complete the process, shouldn't it be included in the full instructions? Question

I was wondering the same thing. If you want to set clockwork as the default recovery on the kyros, then mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh /system/etc/install recovery.sh.bak

should be the first thing entered after su.

I had it copied to both places because it wouldn't read the micro SD initially. I tried mounting and unmounting several times. It did read the zip file after reboot in recovery mode. It worked fine though.

FYI, this method also works with Ubuntu 10.10, that is how I did it. Windows is not necessary,
you only need to be able to copy files through the USB cable, from any
PC file manager, just be sure to follow the above instructions for mounting and dismounting the disks on the Coby Kyros 7015 Tablet.

Thanks to c.lei for your reply to one of my questions.

I had read of the extra command line solution on another board; it was
not mentioned here, but I recall that it solves a couple of problems
with an updated kyros system reverting back to non-rooted and using the
wrong recovery.img on boot, which is why the image needed to be on the sd card.

Since I had read that on another board and found this nice newbie alternate guide which seemed almost complete, I asked about my kyros, which
appears to have been already updated at the factory, and I posted my
specs hoping that someone could check their manually updated revision
numbers and compare them to mine?

I have rooted my kyros but have not tried to do anything else as I was
busy wading thru all the posts on all the boards noting specific
problems related to installing clockwork on an updated system, and
getting frustrated that I could not find any updated guide to include
these documented solutions, so I am still busy wading thru all
the posts so as to compile them into a concise step-by-step guide for myself.

Thanks, yours is same as mine then.. may have to look around to see if there is a problem with our build as far as clockwork maintaining settings, as I did not find any existing recovery image in system/etc so did not need to use the extra command to rename that to .bak in terminal.

Now I need to find the thread for "post market install notes" to reinstall some apps, as I am having some trouble finding it..? Embarassed

Yeah, me either. 'Course I'm no expert. Messed with Linux a little since 1995 or so, but keep forgetting everything except what I need to know to accomplish the task at hand. Google is my friend.

Answering my own post about not finding j0shy81's post pertaining to Post Market Install Notes, it's the second post in the thread, DOH! Rolling Eyes

I don't know about the absolute necessity of reinstalling all of those apps; I think I could just as easily search for updates for the ones I actually use and install those as needed....?

Just finished!! Worked like a charm. So far I'm loving my Coby. I Tried the Maylong, Sylvania, and the Gentouch and nearly gave up on an inexpensive tablet. Gotta say I think the screen is the best I've tried (of the 4). Looking forward to getting 2.2 on it at some point so I can run flash (the flash for 2.1 thread didn't work)

Just follow the directions and you'll be great rooting and adding GAPPS. The only thing was I can only put one of my gmail accounts on as when I select add Gmail f/c

Post by garyg007 on Thu Jan 27, 2011 5:16 pm

I think I successfully rooted my coby mid7015, But I have a couple of questions;

two items showed up on the pull-up application list; they are
(1) Superuser --- the icon is an android 'head' with an "X" underneath it.
(2) Z4root
what are they?

When I boot the tablet - auto-memory-manager starts and a messages flashes on the screen indicating that AMM has been given superuser privileges; Is this a good thing or is it going to be a problem? Before rooting the tablet AMM ran without superuser.privileges.(I have AMM running with the default settings

Is the tablet permanently rooted?] or does one of the two new apps need to be started for it to be rooted?
